Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)

The ShanghaiRanking's Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) focuses primarily on the scientific and research performance of individual universities. As ARWU indicators are based on absolute values, they tend to penalize universities with fewer students and employees.

Masaryk University is not ranked in the primary ARWU ranking.

However in 2018 the institutions ranked between 501 and 1000 are published as ARWU World Top 500 Candidates. Masaryk University is ranked #501–600 among these leading candidates and improved its position from last year's #601–700. Within the Czech Republic, MU became the second best-evaluated university, after Charles University.
